DO NOW: Take the reading quiz. When done, please read Catcher in the Rye silently.
LEARNING TARGET: I will understand Holden’s concerns about “phonies.”
LOOK FORS: I will know that I have hit the learning target when:
- I can find examples from chapters 1-8 when Holden is bothered by phonies.
- I can find examples from chapters 1-8 where Holden is phony himself.
- I can make an inference about why Holden is so concerned about phonies.
AGENDA:
- DO NOW: Reading quiz (10 min) – read silently when done
- Group discussion:
- Choose roles for today
- Catcher Quotation Discussion - post a comment on each quotation from last night’s reading.
- Secretary: make a google doc called "Catcher Journal" and share it with your team members. In the document answer the following:
Phony:
- Record at least one example from chapters 1-8 where Holden criticizes other people for being phony. Direct quote and include citations.
- Record at least one example from chapters 1-8 where Holden is phony himself. Direct quote and include citations.
- Write an explanation about why Holden seems so irritated by phoniness, when he himself is sometimes phony. (At least two complete sentences.)
- In groups: continue to answer the "Catcher Reading Questions" in Notability for chapters 1-8
- Begin reading Chapter 9 if time allows
HW: Please read chapters 9-10; post to “Catcher Quotation Discussion” according to the schedule.
