Catcher Chapters 17-18

DO NOW:  Please take the reading quiz.  When done, please read Catcher in the Rye silently. (quiz attached)


LEARNING TARGET:
    • I will understand Holden’s difficult search for identity


LOOK FORS: I will know that I have hit the learning target when:
    • I can give an example of Holden trying to escape from the roles he is expected to play.
    • I can give an example of an adult role that Holden finds unappealing.
    • I can evaluate various careers for Holden based on what I know about him.


AGENDA:
  1. DO NOW: Reading quiz
  2. Get into your regular group. Assign roles: leader, timekeeper, secretary
  3. Respond to today’s prompts (Groups should respond to both prompts) (10 minutes)
  4. Group: Secretary- answer the following in the “Catcher Journal Week 2” Google Doc:
    1. Career Counseling: Holden talks with Sally about what he doesn't want to do and be when he grows up. He often imagines "escape routes" to avoid taking a role in the adult world, since he finds it so difficult to identify anything he likes.
    2. As Holden's career counselor, please evaluate each of the following career paths for Holden. Discuss how his strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes make each of these a good or a poor fit for him (or somewhere in the middle). Include notes and examples for each one. (full sentences)
      1. Writer for an advertising company
      2. Veterinarian
      3. Financial Sales
      4. Elementary school teacher
      5. Come up with your own after you finish the above!
  5. If time, begin reading chapters 19-20


HW: Please read chapters 19-20; post to “Catcher Quotation Discussion” according to the schedule.
